DMSO: Why This Overlooked Compound Deserves More Attention

DMSO: Why This Overlooked Compound Deserves More Attention

As an osteopathic doctor, one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that healing doesn’t always happen where we’re taught to look.

Sometimes the most promising therapies are the ones that generate curiosity rather than headlines. They may not be widely discussed. They may not have large marketing budgets behind them. And they may not fit neatly into the conventional medical model.

DMSO is one of those therapies.

Over the years, I’ve become increasingly interested in DMSO – not because of bold claims or miracle stories, but because of the growing number of patients, practitioners, and researchers who continue to report remarkable experiences with it.

Listening to Patients

One thing I’ve learned is that patients often notice meaningful changes long before science fully understands why they occur.

Recently, I reviewed the story of an individual living with ALS who began using DMSO as part of his personal wellness journey.

Like many people facing a progressive neurological condition, he had experienced declining strength, fatigue, difficulty swallowing, changes in speech, and reduced stamina. These challenges gradually impacted many aspects of daily life.

After incorporating DMSO into his routine, he began documenting his experiences. He reported improvements in energy, breathing, physical endurance, sleep quality, and overall function. What stood out most was not any single symptom – it was the cumulative changes that enabled him to have hope for the future.

Hope is powerful.

Anyone who has cared for someone with a chronic illness understands that maintaining quality of life can be just as important as any laboratory result.

Does one person’s experience prove anything scientifically?

No.

But I also don’t believe we should ignore patient experiences simply because they don’t fit neatly into a textbook.

Every major medical discovery began with someone noticing something worth investigating.

What Makes DMSO So Unique?

DMSO, or dimethyl sulfoxide, has been studied for decades.

Researchers have explored its potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and tissue-penetrating properties. Scientists have also examined its ability to help reduce swelling, improve circulation, and protect tissues from oxidative stress.

What fascinates me is the breadth of conditions that researchers have investigated – from chronic pain and arthritis to neurological injuries and inflammatory disorders.

That doesn’t mean DMSO is a cure-all.

But it does suggest that there may be important mechanisms at work that deserve continued scientific attention.

The Brain’s Need for Protection

One of the areas I find particularly interesting involves the brain and nervous system.

When tissues become injured, inflammation and oxidative stress often follow. In the brain, that can be especially problematic because swelling can interfere with blood flow, oxygen delivery, and cellular function.

Researchers have explored whether DMSO may help support the body’s response to these challenges. Some studies have reported encouraging findings related to brain injuries and neurological recovery, leading investigators to continue exploring its potential role in supporting healthy tissue function.

While much remains to be learned, the question itself is worth asking:

Could there be therapies we’ve overlooked because they don’t fit conventional expectations?

Looking Beyond Disease

In functional medicine, we don’t focus solely on diagnoses.

We ask a different question:

How can we support the body to function at its highest level?

Whether we’re discussing nutrition, hormones, gut health, detoxification, mitochondria, or cellular resilience, the goal is always the same – creating an environment where the body can perform the way it was designed to perform.

This is why compounds like DMSO continue to capture my attention.

It is an additional tool that may support the body’s natural ability to adapt, repair, and heal.

Keeping an Open Mind

Medicine continues to evolve.

Many therapies that were once dismissed are now accepted as standard practice. At the same time, some promising ideas fail to withstand scientific scrutiny.

That’s why curiosity matters. Research matters. And listening to patients matters.

My goal is to encourage you to stay informed, stay curious, and become an active participant in your own health journey.

Sometimes the most important discoveries begin with a simple question:

“What if there’s more to the story?”
