Back to School: Supporting Happy and Healthy Children

Back to School: Supporting Happy and Healthy Children

A new school year brings so much for our children—new routines, new teachers, new expectations, new friendships, and sometimes a few first-day jitters too.

One of the best things we can do to encourage happy and healthy children is to support the whole child—body, mind, and spirit—so they are better able to respond to the demands around them.

A balanced body will respond better to the challenges ahead!

Connection comes first.

It’s easy to get busy and overlook the small foundational things that do the most for our health. It’s so important to remember that our children need to feel understood, accepted, attuned with, accompanied, included, and loved. That kind of connection takes time to build, but it creates an important foundation for emotional (nervous system) regulation, confidence, and resilience.

Nutrition matters.

Increasing fresh vegetables, berries, protein and health fats provide important nutrients. Seek to reduce or eliminate excess sugars, processed foods, and refined carbohydrates. This will help support steadier energy and overall wellness. Broths and soups can also be a wonderful way to replenish minerals and support hydration.

Prioritize sleep.

Children need good, restorative sleep to function at their best. Earlier bedtimes and consistent sleep routines can make a meaningful difference in energy, mood, focus, and recovery.

Hydration + minerals.

Encourage plenty of clean water throughout the day—such as reverse-osmosis or spring water when available—and make sure your child is getting adequate minerals as well.

Getting outside for exercise.

Family walks, outdoor play, stretching, and simply spending more time in nature can all help support physical health, mood, focus, and nervous system regulation.

Consider nutritional support.

Depending on your child’s needs, you may want to include supplements in their daily regimen. A few that we recommend include:

For immune boosting:

  • Standard Process Catalyn
  • Standard Process Immuplex
  • Vitamin C
  • Essential oils: On Guard, Thieves, Lemon, Rosemary, Thyme, & Frankincense

For brain clarity & focus:

  • Burbur-Pinella
  • Parsley
  • Essential oils: Calm, Brain Power blend, Thinker focus blend

Support healthy breathing and oxygenation.

Breathing practices that emphasize a longer exhale—such as inhaling gently and allowing the exhale to last about twice as long—may help encourage calmer, more regulated breathing patterns. Resources from ConsciousBreathing.com can provide additional ideas.

Additionally, CO₂-supportive therapies, including baths (carbon dioxide soak) or therapeutic devices, may also be used to support brain health, focus, and clarity.

And EWOT, or Exercise with Oxygen Therapy, is another option that may be appropriate for some individuals.

Support structure and function.

When the physical structure of the body is in alignment – it will function better overall. Regular treatments can improve health and wellness, including:

And remember—you don’t have to do every single thing on this list.

Find what works for your child and your family. Small, consistent choices can add up to meaningful support for happy and healthy children.
